A narrative essay tells a story and often includes anecdotes and personal experiences.



Characteristics of a Narrative Essay

  1.  

    Uses the first-person point of view (use the words I, am, me, my, we, our, us)
  2.  

    Organized chronologically and includes all the parts of a story; an introduction, characters, setting, plot, climax, and conclusion
  3.  

    Shares the significance of events using thoughts and feelings
  4.  

    Uses lots of vivid details to describe the people and setting
  5. The reflective ending shows how the experience affected the writer

Writing Assignment Options

  • Tell a true story from your own experience.
  • Tell a fictional story, but tell it in the first-person point of view. 
  • Tell a true story that happened to someone else, but write it in the first person, as if it happened to you.
